Report on scale reading from Carradale North salmon escape published

Farmed salmon caught by angler following escape (Credit: C. Sommerville).

In August 2020, following a storm event, 48,834 farmed salmon escaped from Mowi’s Carradale North farm. After anglers reported catching farmed salmon, Fisheries Management Scotland coordinated work to verify the origin of fish identified by anglers as being of suspected farmed origin. The results demonstrate that 295 salmon were confirmed by direct scale reading as farmed salmon. A further 171 suspected farmed salmon were caught in rivers and reported following visual identification. There was strong agreement between visual identification of farmed salmon by anglers and subsequent confirmation of the origin of caught fish by scale analysis.
