AquacultureMarine Harvest, Scotland’s largest salmon farm company today announced it has committed itself to a new international scheme aiming to reducing the environmental and social impacts associated with the industry. Marine Harvest Scotland said it will begin seeking certification for all its sites by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).

Alan Wells, Policy and Planning Director for the Association of Salmon Fishery Boards (ASFB) commented,
ASFB welcome the news that Marine Harvest will seek company-wide ASC certification. We understand that the ASC standards will require Marine Harvest to publish weekly site-specific sea lice data and undertake a phased withdrawal from smolt production in freshwater cages – two of the key issues identified in our policy on salmon aquaculture. We hope that other companies in Scotland will follow Marine Harvest’s lead.”
