Across Scotland, peatlands are the unsung superheroes (13 per cent of the planet’s blanket bogs are found here) in tackling climate and nature crises.
These ancient, waterlogged habitats act as important carbon stores, rich ecosystems as well as being a key feature of our iconic landscape.
Unfortunately, when degraded, as is the case with much of Scotland’s peatland, they emit rather than store carbon and are now our second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions after transport.
But all is not lost.
Work is well underway to restore Scotland’s peatland, including right here in the National Park.
Since 2015, working with landowners, estates and local communities we’ve restored more than 2,580 hectares of degraded peatland across 29 sites – roughly 193 Hampden Parks combined! In 2024/25 alone, we delivered 697.5 hectares across eight major projects, surpassing our annual target – but we’ve plenty of work to do.
