Escapes of farmed fish can have a range of negative impacts on Scotland’s native fish. This can include weakening the genetic integrity of wild fish through interbreeding, competition for food and habitat and predation on young fish. Fisheries Management Scotland have now published guidance on capture of escaped farmed fish. The guidance explains how to identify escaped farmed fish and what to do if you capture one. Farmed fish can often be easily identified through fin, gill cover and snout deformities, as well as heavier pigmentation than their wild counterparts. The guidance provides visual illustrations of what to look for. We ask anglers to remain vigilant to the potential capture of these fish and to report details to the Marine Scotland Fish Health Inspectorate and Fisheries Management Scotland – details of how to do this are provided in the guidance.
