The River Cree District Salmon Fishery Board has issued a new Conservation Code in the interests of conserving salmon and sea trout stocks in Galloway’s most prolific river. Jamie Hyslop, Chairman of the Board, explained: “Many of the Cree’s beats already operate their own conservation codes. The Board’s new Code is designed to underwrite these codes and provide a cohesive minimum benchmark for all beats throughout the catchment to adhere to. In particular the code aims to protect the vulnerable stocks of early-running spring salmon, the sea trout stocks which have collapsed in recent years, and salmon near to spawning at the end of the fishing season. We cannot afford to allow the actions of a minority to undermine our determination to protect and conserve migratory fish stocks”.
