At long last the River Spey has opened. It always seems a long time between all the other rivers opening and waiting for our turn.
We had the traditional opening generously Sponsored by Aberlour Whisky and Walkers Shortbread and there were samples of both products on offer, Le Petit Gourmand also offered coffee and rolls for those who wished.
Spey board Director, Roger Knight welcomed everyone and the Rev Shuna Dicks blessed the river before Angus Robertson the local MP addressed the crowd and officially opened the river. Graham Ritchie last years Quaich winner was on hand to pour an entire bottle of Aberlour Whisky into the river.

It was a cold start to the season and some of the banks could be treacherous with the lying snow. There appeared to be more kelts on the go this year which breaks up the day, though their teeth can be sharp trying to unhook them and safely return them to continue there journey back to the sea.
The first fish of the season was landed and returned by local angler Evie Glass rom the Junction Pool at Rothes assisted by gillie Robbie Stronach.

The second and largest of the season was caught in the afternoon by Arty McKerron from The Piles Pool (right) at Arndilly a brave man clambering along that bank when there is snow lying. Gillie Blair Banks on his first day at his new beat as able to assist him land his fish.
