Summary

The Catch and Release Best Practice project was delivered as a key action of the Wild Salmon Strategy, promoting responsible angling practices to protect wild Atlantic salmon in Scotland. Since 1994, the percentage of rod-caught salmon released has risen to over 95%, demonstrating Scottish anglers’ global leadership in conservation. The project provides practical guidance to anglers to maximise salmon survival during catch and release.

Outputs

  • Updated Best Practice Guidance: A comprehensive guide for anglers covering fish handling, water temperature, air exposure, biosecurity risks, and weighing/photography practices.

  • Short Film: A concise educational film highlighting key steps anglers can take to ensure high survival rates during catch and release.

Funding

The project was primarily funded by the Marine Directorate, with additional project support provided by the Glasgow Angling Centre.

The project was led by Fisheries Management Scotland (FMS) and coordinated by a steering group comprising Angling Scotland, the Scottish Government, Tweed Start Ambassadors, Glasgow Angling Centre, Lower Oykel Fishings, Angling Trust, and FishPal.
