Summary
This project supported efforts by salmon fisheries managers to protect wild Atlantic salmon from seal predation by investigating, developing, and testing non-lethal deterrent methods. The initiative addressed concerns over a small number of ‘specialist’ seals entering rivers that disproportionately impact salmon populations. By employing Acoustic Deterrent Devices (ADDs) — particularly mobile units mounted on watercraft — the project aimed to prevent seals from entering rivers, thereby reducing predation pressure without affecting cetacean populations.
Outputs
The mobile ADDs were effective in deterring seals in some circumstances. However in most cases, the deterrents were less effective in a fisheries management context due to local environmental and behavioural factors. As part of our efforts to protect wild salmon and sea trout from predation, we submitted a report on this work to Scottish Government as part of the seal licensing review. We are continuing to press for additional action to help protect wild salmonids from predation.
Funding
The project was funded by Marine Fund Scotland, which provided financial support for the procurement of advanced acoustic deterrent systems and appropriate watercraft for deployment. This investment enabled comprehensive field trials and the collection of critical data on the effectiveness of non-lethal seal control methods.
Partners
The initiative was led by Fisheries Management Scotland and its members. Collaborative efforts among river managers, local authorities, and stakeholders ensured that the testing of Acoustic Deterrent Devices was carried out under realistic conditions and that the findings could be effectively applied to protect wild salmon and sea trout.
