The Nith appears to have undergone a major shift in course along its lower tidal reaches.

Carsethorn has seen massive change as the river now charges past the village with the outgoing tide.

Huge volumes of fast-flowing water have carved a deep channel below the old pier, creating potentially dangerous conditions.

Previously the main channel was far out into the estuary and closer to the Caerlaverock side.

Nith District Salmon Fishery Board director Jim Henderson checked out the situation at Carsethorn on Wednesday – and was stunned by the change.

He told the News: β€œIn the past I ran an outfit called the Nith Young Anglers Group and would occasionally go sea fishing at Carsethorn because it was a very safe area.
